Contract renewed as Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu until 2022

The Board of Trustees of the Gran Teatre del Liceu approved the renewal of Josep Pons’s contract as Music Director through the 2021/22 season, extending the artistic project he began in 2012.

The renewal recognised the work carried out with the Liceu Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, as well as the artistic development achieved during the first years of his tenure. Since his appointment, Josep Pons had focused on strengthening the musical standards of the company’s ensembles, expanding both the symphonic and operatic repertoire while promoting a programme distinguished by artistic excellence and international ambition.

During this initial period, the Liceu presented new productions of works by Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, Claude Debussy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, collaborating with leading stage directors and internationally renowned artists. At the same time, Josep Pons strengthened the orchestra’s symphonic activity through concerts and recordings, further developing its artistic identity beyond the opera pit.

The contract extension until 2022 ensured the continuity of this long-term artistic vision, aimed at further developing the theatre’s musical ensembles and reinforcing the Gran Teatre del Liceu’s position among Europe’s leading opera houses.
