Josep Pons received the Critics’ Award for Best Musical Direction of the 2017/18 season, earning the distinction for the third consecutive year. Presented by the Friends of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Association, the award recognised his artistic leadership of the theatre’s resident musical ensembles and the continued development of the artistic project launched in 2012.
The Critics’ Awards honour the most outstanding productions, artists and artistic achievements of each Liceu season. In this edition, Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, conducted by Josep Pons, emerged as the evening’s major winner, receiving several awards. Critics particularly praised the artistic level achieved by the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, as well as the consistency of the long-term musical vision developed over recent seasons.
The 2017/18 season included major productions such as Tristan und Isolde, Don Giovanni, Un ballo in maschera and Rusalka, alongside an extensive symphonic programme. Together, these projects reflected the artistic growth of the Liceu’s resident ensembles and their increasing recognition from both audiences and specialised critics.
