The Deutsche Radio Philharmonie (DRP) warmly welcomes Josep Pons, who takes up the role of Principal Conductor and Artistic Director this season. Under his leadership, the orchestra embarks on a new artistic journey, shaped by a rich and thoughtful programme to be developed over the coming years.
At the heart of this new direction lies “Visions of Europe”, a multi-season project that reflects on Europe’s cultural history and its contemporary challenges. Pons envisions a musical dialogue between past and present — where concerts are not only performances, but also cultural reflections designed to inspire thought beyond musical enjoyment.
Each season will feature “spaces for reflection” exploring themes such as The World of Yesterday —inspired by Stefan Zweig and linking composers like Johann Strauss, Alban Berg, Dvořák and Bartók—; Music at European Courts, connecting works by Lully, Rameau, Ravel and Strauss; and Laments and Passions, a journey through centuries of music expressing grief and devotion.
A special focus will be dedicated to Hildegard von Bingen, one of the great women of the Middle Ages. The world premiere of a new oratorio by Roland Kunz will launch the cycle “Universum Hildegard”, including chamber concerts, collaborations with local ensembles and public talks.
The Creative Partner for the season is Brett Dean, whose works will feature in three concerts, while Michael Schønwandt joins as Principal Guest Conductor, a position reinstated for the first time since Stanisław Skrowaczewski.
With Josep Pons at the helm, the DRP invites audiences to experience the unifying and emotional power of music, in concert halls, museums, schools, and new creative spaces across the region.
