The event formed part of the Liceu\u2019s <strong>175th-anniversary celebrations<\/strong> and its programme of international development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The concert completed an exchange between the <strong>Gran Teatre del Liceu<\/strong> and the <strong>Op\u00e9ra national de Paris<\/strong>, begun the previous September when the Paris Opera Orchestra visited Barcelona under <strong>Gustavo Dudamel<\/strong> to perform Mahler\u2019s Ninth Symphony. The partnership reflected the close relationship between two of Europe\u2019s leading opera institutions and offered the Liceu Orchestra an opportunity to present its artistic development to a Parisian audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The performance featured <strong>Sir Bryn Terfel<\/strong> as Bluebeard and <strong>Ir\u00e9ne Theorin<\/strong> as Judith, both making their role debuts. With a libretto by <strong>B\u00e9la Bal\u00e1zs<\/strong>, the one-act opera condenses an intense psychological journey into approximately one hour, combining Wagnerian influence with the rhythms, inflections and musical traditions of the Hungarian language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">French critics responded enthusiastically to <strong>Josep Pons\u2019s<\/strong> conducting and to the orchestra\u2019s performance. <strong>Concertclassic<\/strong> praised his ability to establish an atmosphere of persistent unease from the opening pianissimo, while preserving the clarity and transparency of Bart\u00f3k\u2019s rich orchestration and revealing its many subtle shades of colour. The review also highlighted the flexibility and precision of the Liceu Orchestra\u2019s individual sections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Olyrix<\/strong> described Josep Pons as the principal architect of the performance, emphasising his energy, precision, clarity and fluency.
