The event formed part of the <strong>Montserrat Millennium Music Festival<\/strong> and was made possible through a collaboration between <strong>Montserrat Abbey<\/strong>, the <strong>Salvat Foundation<\/strong> and the <strong>National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The programme featured the <strong>Prelude to Act I<\/strong> and the <strong>complete third act<\/strong> of Wagner\u2019s final music drama. The performance brought together the <strong>JONC<\/strong>, the <strong>Escolania de Montserrat<\/strong>, the <strong>Schola Cantorum<\/strong> and the <strong>Cor de Cavallers<\/strong>, formed by former members of the Escolania. The cast was led by <strong>Nikolai Schukoff<\/strong> as Parsifal, <strong>Albert Dohmen<\/strong> as Gurnemanz and <strong>Jos\u00e9 Antonio L\u00f3pez<\/strong> as Amfortas, with a brief appearance by <strong>Isabelle Cals<\/strong> as Kundry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The participation of the JONC gave the project particular personal significance. <strong>Josep Pons was the orchestra\u2019s founding conductor<\/strong>, leading its artistic development from its creation in 1993 until 2001. His return to the ensemble for a project of this scale connected the educational beginnings of his career with one of the central works of the Wagnerian repertoire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The choice of <em>Parsifal<\/em> also reflected the opera\u2019s symbolic association with Montserrat. Through the writings of <strong>Wilhelm von Humboldt<\/strong> and <strong>Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/strong>, the mountain acquired an important place in the imagination of German Romanticism. This tradition contributed to the later identification of Montserrat with Wagner\u2019s <strong>Montsalvat<\/strong>, the sacred castle where the Holy Grail is guarded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Wagner described <em>Parsifal<\/em>, his final stage work, as a <strong>\u201csacred festival drama.\u201d<\/strong> Its third act, centred on compassion, redemption and spiritual renewal, acquired particular intensity within the Basilica, where the score entered into a direct dialogue with Montserrat\u2019s setting, monastic tradition and Millennium celebrations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The event attracted considerable public interest. Almost <strong>two thousand people<\/strong> followed the performance: around seven hundred inside the Basilica and more than a thousand through a large screen installed in Pla\u00e7a de Santa Maria. The concert was also broadcast by <strong>La Xarxa de Comunicaci\u00f3 Local<\/strong> and streamed through Montserrat Abbey\u2019s YouTube channel.<\/p>\n<p>The performance brought <em>Parsifal<\/em> for the first time to the mountain traditionally associated with its symbolic world.
