"Dear friends,
I have decided to acccept the leadership of a new orchestral project after the delighful stage at the Liceu.
It involves the Deutsch Radio Philharmonie, an "A" orchestra within the select group of German state. radio orchestras.
I have decided to take on this new challenge with an orchestra that has undergone significant renewal in recent years. They aspire to develop an artistic project, which will begin in October 2025, and will be pioneering the orchestral world of the 21st century."



This morning the appointment of Josep Pons as the new artistic director and head of the famous German orchestra Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, one of the most outstanding ensembles within the German Radio orchestra system, was announced. He will begin his tenure in the 2025/2026 season, succeeding Finnish director Pietari Inkinen and following in the wake of previous starters such as Myung-Whun Chung, Marcello Viotti and Hans Zender.

Josep Pons is considered the most important Spanish director of his generation. He has been a regular collaborator with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie since 2006 with such notable performances as the opening of the Beethoven Festival in Warsaw in 2017 and the opening concert of the Saar Music Festival in 2017 as well as two concerts with Frank Peter Zimmermann in 2011 and 2018.

Josep Pons is musical director of The Liceu Opera Barcelona and is honorary director of the National Orchestra of Spain and the City of Granada Orchestra. He regularly conducts the best European orchestras including the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, WDR Cologne, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchester, Orchester de Paris, NHK Symphony orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic or BBC Symphony Orchestra among others.
