Josep Pons appointed Honorary Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has appointed Maestro Josep Pons as Honorary Music Director starting in the 2026/2027 season, in recognition of his artistic career, his commitment to the institution, and his decisive contribution to the Theatre’s artistic consolidation over the past years.

The title of Honorary Music Director is a symbolic distinction awarded by the Liceu to figures who have maintained a long-standing and meaningful relationship with the institution, leaving a lasting mark on its artistic and cultural development.

During his fourteen years as Music Director of the Liceu, Josep Pons has led a period marked by excellence and dedication, bringing an inspiring leadership and a renewed artistic vision that have established the Theatre as a benchmark of prestige on both the national and international stage.

In the maestro’s own words:

“I am deeply grateful to the Gran Teatre del Liceu for the honour of being named Honorary Music Director. It is the theatre I love, with the people I love, in the country I love.”

Pons also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the musical bodies of the Theatre, and especially to the orchestra:

“In this expression of gratitude, I cannot forget the musical ensembles of the Theatre and, in particular, the orchestra — my travelling companions. I thank them for their commitment, their energy, their outstanding musical qualities, and their humanity.”
