In November 2021, Josep Pons received the Berguedà Honorary Culture Prize, one of the region’s highest cultural distinctions, in recognition of his internationally acclaimed artistic career and his enduring connection with his native county.
Presented as part of the Berguedà Culture Awards, the distinction honoured more than four decades devoted to orchestral conducting and a career developed with some of Europe’s and Spain’s leading musical institutions. It also recognised Josep Pons’s contribution to the promotion of Catalan and Spanish music and his commitment to building long-term artistic projects.
During the award ceremony, particular emphasis was placed on his role as one of the Berguedà’s foremost cultural ambassadors. Through his work with the Teatre Lliure Chamber Orchestra, the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, the Spanish National Orchestra and the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra, Josep Pons has played a major role in bringing the musical heritage of his country to international audiences.
The Honorary Culture Prize carried a special significance because it came from the region where Josep Pons was born. Beyond recognising his artistic achievements, it celebrated the lasting personal and cultural ties he has always maintained with the Berguedà.
