The Gran Teatre del Liceu unveiled its 2021/22 season, a programme of particular importance as it celebrated the 175th anniversary of the theatre’s inauguration. The anniversary marked a new chapter in the institution’s history, reaffirming its commitment to artistic excellence, international outreach and its role as one of Barcelona’s leading cultural landmarks.
The season combined major operatic masterpieces with new productions and interdisciplinary projects, maintaining the balance between tradition and innovation that had become a defining feature of the Liceu’s artistic identity. Among the highlights were Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Alban Berg’s Wozzeck and Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, all conducted by Josep Pons and forming the musical backbone of the anniversary season.
As Music Director, Josep Pons continued to lead the artistic development of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, consolidating a long-term project launched in 2012 that had significantly strengthened the artistic profile and international reputation of the theatre’s resident ensembles. The new season also brought together many of the world’s leading conductors, singers and stage directors, reinforcing the Liceu’s position among Europe’s foremost opera houses.
Celebrating its 175th anniversary, the Liceu looked towards the future while honouring its remarkable heritage, reaffirming its role as a centre for artistic creation, innovation and the promotion of operatic culture.
