On Thursday, 1 May 2025, at 9:00 p.m., the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat will host a concert version of Wagner’s Parsifal, conducted by Maestro Josep Pons. The concert is part of the Millennium Music Festival and features the collaboration of the Abbey of Montserrat, the Salvat Foundation, and the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya (JONC).
The work —Wagner’s final opera, which he described as a “sacred stage festival”— holds a special connection to the landscape and spirit of Montserrat, a place that deeply influenced the German Romantic imagination through figures such as Goethe and Humboldt.
This concert version will include the Prelude to Act I and the entire Act III, performed by the JONC, the Escolania de Montserrat, the Schola Cantorum, and the Chorus of Knights, under the maestro’s baton.
The performance is free of charge with advance reservation, offering an exceptional opportunity to experience the bond between Wagner’s music and the symbolic landscape of Montserrat.
“Parsifal is a work about inner purity and spiritual quest. Performing it in Montserrat —a place filled with spirituality and silence— is a unique experience that transcends music.”
— Josep Pons
Through this project, Josep Pons reaffirms his deep connection with Wagner’s music and his commitment to projects that unite art, spirituality, and place.
