The Council of Ministers of Spain awarded Josep Pons the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, one of the country’s highest cultural honours. The distinction recognises individuals and institutions whose work has made an exceptional contribution to artistic creation, the preservation of cultural heritage and the promotion of culture.
The award acknowledged a career spanning more than four decades, dedicated to orchestral conducting, the development of long-term artistic projects and the musical growth of some of Spain’s leading institutions. Throughout his career, Josep Pons has played a decisive role in the artistic development of the Teatre Lliure Chamber Orchestra, the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, the Spanish National Orchestra and the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra.
The distinction also recognised his commitment to contemporary music, the rediscovery and international promotion of Spanish and Catalan musical heritage, and an extensive international career both on the concert platform and in the recording studio. His work has contributed to bringing composers such as Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Isaac Albéniz, Xavier Montsalvatge, Roberto Gerhard and Benet Casablancas to wider international audiences, alongside the great European symphonic and operatic repertoire.
The Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts stands as one of the highest distinctions of Josep Pons’s career, recognising a lifetime dedicated to musical excellence, artistic leadership and the promotion of culture.
