From March 17 to 30, 2025, the Gran Teatre del Liceu presents a new production of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin, directed by Katharina Wagner —the composer’s great-granddaughter— and conducted by maestro Josep Pons.
Maestro Josep Pons once again immerses himself in Wagner’s universe at the head of the Liceu Orchestra and Chorus, joined by an exceptional cast featuring some of the most acclaimed voices in the repertoire: Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role, Iréne Theorin, Elisabeth Teige, and Miina-Liisa Värelä, among others.
This long-awaited new production —originally scheduled for 2020— features a striking visual design that evokes a wooded, symbolic landscape, far removed from the traditional fairy-tale setting. Three large suspended cubes represent the inner worlds of the characters and their struggle between desire, power, and faith.
With this staging, Katharina Wagner offers a contemporary and introspective reading of the opera, while Josep Pons delivers a musical interpretation that is both intense, balanced, and deeply emotional.
“Lohengrin is one of Wagner’s most refined scores, full of light and mystery. Conducting it at the Liceu, with a team of this caliber, is an immense privilege,” says maestro Josep Pons.
