The Gran Teatre del Liceu has opened its 2024-2025 season with Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Shostakovich, conducted by Josep Pons. The opera, known for its complexity and dramatic power, reflects the Liceu’s ongoing commitment to 20th-century repertoire.
The production, directed by Àlex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus), features an impressive set design that includes a pool holding more than 10,000 liters of water, used as both a symbolic and visual element.
Josep Pons noted that “conducting this opera is both a musical and emotional challenge that tests every section of the orchestra.” His interpretation aims to highlight both the orchestral strength and the lyrical sensitivity of the score.
The production runs at the Liceu throughout November, featuring an international cast alongside the Chorus and Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
