In January 2023, Josep Pons conducted a special concert devoted to Richard Wagner at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, bringing together three of today’s leading Wagnerian sopranos: Iréne Theorin, Nina Stemme and Miina-Liisa Värelä.
The programme featured some of the most celebrated excerpts from Tristan und Isolde, Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung and Parsifal. The combination of these internationally acclaimed artists with the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra made the event one of the highlights of the theatre’s season.
Critics particularly praised the orchestra’s performance under Josep Pons, highlighting the richness of the orchestral sound, its balance and transparency, and its ability to sustain Wagner’s vast musical architecture while remaining attentive to the singers.
