On 15 February 2024, the Gran Teatre del Liceu unveiled its 2024/25 season, presented under the motto “Pursuing a Dream”. The programme combined major operatic productions, symphonic concerts, new creations and educational initiatives. It also marked the penultimate season of Josep Pons as Music Director, a position he had held since 2012.
During the season, Josep Pons conducted four of the theatre’s major productions. The programme opened with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, followed by Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin and Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka, which concluded the operatic season.
His symphonic appearances included the continuation of the Mahler Universe cycle with Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, the programme A Night in Paris featuring music by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel with pianist Javier Perianes, and a vocal gala with Asmik Grigorian and Matthias Goerne devoted to Wagner and Richard Strauss.
The season also featured productions of La forza del destino, La traviata, Le nozze di Figaro, Akhnaten, La gata perduda, together with dance, recitals and contemporary creations, reaffirming the Liceu’s commitment to artistic excellence and stylistic diversity.
After more than a decade under Josep Pons’s musical leadership, the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra and Chorus had reached a remarkable level of artistic maturity, combining an expanded repertoire, a distinctive orchestral identity and increasing international recognition.
The 2024/25 season therefore represented another important milestone in the long-term artistic project developed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu over the previous decade.
